My name is Reuben Duarte but most of my friends call me “Roobs”. I currently work in Los Angeles as a land use planner for Gresham Savage Nolan & Tilden, where I work with our clients on land use, real estate and economic development matters. I consider myself a moderate Democrat and personally believe that real estate development and planning are integral parts of creating a strong economy that works for everyone, and that development is often misunderstood by those who often oppose projects and pro-development policies. Of course, that’s not to say there aren’t bad projects and bad policies out there.
My professional background is in law, politics, and urban planning. I worked as a paralegal at a law firm in the Bay Area that specializes in real estate development. At the time, I thought I wanted to attend law school. That later changed. While still in the Bay Area, I also served as a Commissioner on the Waterfront Commission for the City of Berkeley and as an Executive Board Member of East Bay Young Democrats in Oakland. After moving to Los Angeles for grad school, I served as Chair of the California Young Democrats LGBTQ Caucus, worked as a planner for the City of West Hollywood, and worked as a freelance planner for a while after grad school.
Personally, the only sport I can play well is baseball. I used to play and still love jazz. I’m a decent bartender and an excellent cook. I love to go out to dinner at the latest restaurants but nothing beats a great and greasy hamburger or street taco.
